My Business WhatsApp Was Banned: What Now? A Step-by-Step Recovery Plan (with an Interactive Diagnoser)

Business WhatsApp banned or restricted? Identify the action, request a review the right way with a ready template, and keep customers until it's back.

Quick answer

First, identify the type of action: in the app it may be a permanent ban, a temporary ban, or a restriction that stops you starting new chats; in the API it may be a warning, a messaging restriction of 1 to 30 days, or an account lock. Request a review once with an honest explanation (from the app, or from Business Support Home for the API), and keep customers informed through your other channels until the action is lifted.

01The first 10 minutes: 6 things not to do

  • Don't delete the app: you may lose chats that weren't backed up, and it won't lift the ban.
  • Don't register the number on another device or a modified app: it confirms the suspicion instead of solving it.
  • Don't send multiple review requests: one request per number, and repeating it doesn't speed up the reply.
  • Don't open a new number and carry on the same way: if the cause hasn't changed, the new number will be banned too.
  • Don't pay anyone promising a "guaranteed unban": the decision is WhatsApp's alone, and these services are usually scams.
  • Don't continue the campaign from staff numbers: it moves the problem to new numbers and confuses your customers.
Watch out

If your number is on the WhatsApp Business API, stop all scheduled campaigns immediately until you know the reason for the action.

02Diagnose the type of ban and get your plan

The message you see determines the type of action and how to fix it. Choose what appears on your screen to get the steps and a ready-to-copy review request.

WhatsApp believes the number's activity broke its Terms of Service: spam, fraud or unofficial tools. The number is fully blocked.

1Tap "Request a review" on the ban screen in the app. One request per number is enough; repeating it won't speed things up.
2Write a short, honest explanation: who you are, how you use WhatsApp, and what you have changed.
3Wait for the decision notice in the app, and don't delete the app or re-register the number while you wait.
4Tell customers through your other channels (Instagram, website, phone) that you are replying there for now.
5If the request is rejected, don't repeat the same approach on a new number. Fix the cause and move to the official WhatsApp Business API.

Hello WhatsApp team. This number belongs to [Business name], a [business type] in [city]. We use WhatsApp Business to reply to customers who contact us first and to confirm their orders. We do not use unofficial apps or bulk-sending tools, and we only message customers who asked to hear from us. [What you changed, e.g. we removed an old contact list]. Please review our account. Thank you.

Nobody can guarantee a ban will be lifted. The decision is WhatsApp and Meta's alone, so beware of anyone selling a "guaranteed unban".

04How do you write a review request that gets accepted?

  1. Introduce your business: name, type, city and website.
  2. Explain how you use WhatsApp: replying to customers, confirming orders, and offers to those who opted in.
  3. Admit the cause if you know it: "We messaged an old list without consent" is clearer than denial.
  4. State what you changed: deleted the list, recategorized the template, stopped the unofficial tool.
  5. Provide proof: how you collect consent, a link to your privacy policy, and your commercial registration if asked.
  6. Keep it short: one clear paragraph is better than a full page.
Tip

For the API, the review request is made from Business Support Home in Meta Business Suite: select the violation, then "Request review". Also contact your official provider so they can follow up on the case with you.

According to Meta's documentation, reviews of business platform violations usually take 24 to 48 hours, and the outcome is either "no change" or "violation overturned". Not all spam violations can be appealed.

05Don't lose customers while you're banned

A ban stops one channel, not your business. What matters is that customers know where to find you in the meantime.

  • Instagram and Messenger: update the auto-reply and post a story or post with your temporary contact method.
  • Calls: direct customers to your landline or call center, and turn on an automated voice message explaining the situation.
  • Website and store: a banner at the top of the page with an alternative contact option.
  • Open orders: an SMS or email to customers with orders in progress only.
  • The team: one standard reply everyone uses, with no promises of a return date you don't know.

07When should you move to the WhatsApp Business API?

If the ban was caused by sending volume or automation on the app, the fix is not a new number but a new way of working. The official API is not immune to penalties, but it gives you what the app doesn't:

  • Warnings before restrictions, and a quality rating for every template.
  • An official, clear way to request a review, and an approved provider who follows up with you.
  • Campaigns with approved templates, plus auto-replies and an AI agent without unofficial tools.
  • Your conversations saved in the CRM, not on a single phone.

Key takeaways

  • First identify the type of action: restriction, temporary ban, permanent ban, API restriction or lock.
  • Send one review request, short and honest, stating the cause and what changed.
  • Inform customers through your other channels, and don't move the campaign to staff numbers.
  • After the ban is lifted, start slowly and clean your list before any campaign.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get unbanned on WhatsApp?

For the app there is no published timeframe, and you get a notification in the app after the decision. For the API, Meta says a review usually takes 24 to 48 hours, and the messaging restriction itself lasts from 1 to 30 days.

Will I lose my chats if the number is banned?

Don't delete the app, and keep your backups. On platforms that save conversations in a CRM, such as Modeer 360, the conversation history stays in the system.

Can I move a banned number to the WhatsApp API?

A banned number usually won't work on any WhatsApp product until the penalty is lifted. Ask the Modeer 360 team to check the number's status before taking any step.

Does a WhatsApp ban affect Facebook and Instagram?

The action is usually on the WhatsApp account, but serious violations can extend to your Meta business portfolio. Check Business Support Home to see the scope of the action.

I was banned but I didn't send spam. Why?

Common causes: reports from customers who didn't expect your message, an unofficial tool used by a staff member, or a recycled number that was banned before. Submit a review request and explain your usage clearly.
